A Better Fit Starts Here: Preparing for Your Alterations Appointment
· David Hubbard · Alterations, Care, Fittings, News

From everyday trousers to a special occasion dress, a little preparation helps make your fitting more productive. Here’s what to bring, what to discuss, and what to check before taking your garment home.
A favorite outfit should feel comfortable and let you move with confidence. Whether you need a shorter hem, an adjusted waist, or a better fit for a special occasion, alterations can help a garment work better for you.
Before your visit to David’s, a little preparation can make it easier to explain what you want and discuss what is possible.
Bring the Shoes You Plan to Wear
Shoes affect where a hem falls. Trousers that look right with dress shoes may drag when worn with flats, while a long dress may need a different hem length depending on the heel height.
Bring the actual shoes you expect to wear, especially for formalwear. If you are still choosing between pairs, mention that during the fitting.
Wear the Right Layers
Bring or wear the undergarments and layers you intend to use with your outfit. A different bra, shapewear, or an undershirt can change how a garment sits.
For a jacket, consider bringing the shirt you normally wear underneath. For a special occasion dress, bring any supporting garments that will be part of the finished outfit.
Explain How the Garment Feels
A useful fitting includes more than a look in the mirror. Explain where the garment feels tight, loose, too long, or uncomfortable.
Try a few everyday movements:
- Sit down to check comfort at the waist and hips.
- Walk a few steps to assess the hem.
- Reach forward to check sleeve and shoulder movement.
- Describe any pulling, slipping, or restricted movement.
A clear description helps guide the discussion about the adjustment you need.
Share Your Event Date Early
If the garment is for a wedding, interview, celebration, or trip, share the date at the beginning of the conversation. Some work may involve more than one fitting.
Ask about the expected schedule before committing, and leave room for a final try-on when possible.
Discuss What Is Possible Before Work Begins
Fabric, lining, seam allowance, embellishments, and garment construction all affect alteration options. Taking a garment in and letting it out can present very different challenges.
Before authorizing work, confirm the proposed changes, the estimate, and the expected completion date. If you have a preferred fit, describe it clearly or bring a reference photo.
Try Everything On at Collection
When collecting your garment, try it on with the same shoes and layers used during the fitting. Check the fit while standing, sitting, and moving.
Your final try-on is the opportunity to ask questions and discuss anything that still needs attention.
